  • Meet at Leas Cliff Hall
  • Starting on the Leas, where most of the buildings were used to provide a rest Camp, Eamonn Rooney will lead the walk to the Road of Remembrance down which marched millions of soldiers to embark for France at the harbour and also saw the arrival of Belgian refugees at the start of the War. From there you will go to Tontine Street and end the walk at the memorial plaque marking the site where a bomb fell in 1917 killing and injuring many people.

  • Magnificently sited on the East Cliff in Folkestone, the Roman villa was partially re-excavated in 1989. Using the only known film of the excavation (by Mike Dugdale) as an introduction, Richard Cross, Canterbury City Council archaeological officer, will talk about the discovery of the villa in 1923.

  • At its height Roman Britain was a complex and wealthy state. But by the end of the 4th century AD it was one that revealed itself as an unstable entity in which tribal and political fragmentation still existed. This probably contributed to its fall and enabled the subsequent immigration of the Anglo-Saxons. In his absorbing book Stuart Laycock examines the end of Roman Britain and compares it to states that have recently disintegrated such as Yugoslavia and Iraq.
